How many things are you a “NO” to? A bad boss, gossiping colleagues, poor customer service, traffic, corrupt politicians, poverty, etc., etc.
Do you notice that the things you’re against never seem to go away? If you’re against jobs you hate, unhealthy relationships, being overweight, an uncertain future, why do you always seem to have them in your life?
Do you simply need a bigger sword to vanquish your no’s or are you in need of a better strategy?
Eliminating what you’re against doesn’t guarantee what you’re for
It’s actually your objective that needs revision.
From a very practical perspective, focussing on preventing or stopping something doesn’t guarantee its opposite will replace it. You could achieve your objective and still not have what you really want.
- Being anti-war doesn’t necessarily bring peace. You could live in a perpetual state of intolerance, and prejudice and simply be prevented from going to war.
- Being against that extra 10 lbs, won’t necessarily make you healthy and fit or even sexy. You might live in a state of constant desire for foods you love while still being stressed and at risk of heart attack or stroke.
- Being against others’ short-sightedness and narrow-mindedness won’t make them desire knowledge and broaden their perspective. They’ll simply stop expressing their viewpoints around you, or you settle into a practice of opinion slinging whenever you’re together.
What you really want won’t come from being at war with their opposites.
This is how the Universe operates and it’s time we all start aligning ourselves with it.
If you still don’t believe take a look at the War on Drugs, under-age sex, teenage binge drinking, terrorism etc., etc., You’ll notice that no matter the successes, they never move us any closer to what we do want, which is responsible, well-adjusted kids who make their informed choices in a world at peace, a world where everyone prospers and lives in harmony with nature.
You might describe it differently but you get the point.
Be a Yes
So instead of being against your big belly or your big fat ass, try being a gigantic YES to what you want in life. Even if it hardly ever seems to occur in your normal day start looking out for even the smallest example e.g.
- Experience a smiling waiter and say yes to great service.
- Find a penny on the floor and say yes to wealth.
- See a friend in a relationship that you would like to have? Say yes to healthy loving relationship.
- Keep saying yes to what you want and be grateful every time you find it.
Start a practice of living in a constant state of alertness for what you’re a yes to and believe that it’s here already. Like a receiver tuned to a certain station you will start to experience more of what you want and less of what you’re against.
“You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might pray also in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.
For what is prayer but the expansion of yourself into the living ether?
And if it is for your comfort to pour your darkness into space, it is also for your delight to pour forth the dawning of your heart.“
Khalil Gibran
